Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bloomineral?

Bloomineral is a climate technology startup using biomineralization — the same natural process by which marine organisms form shells — to permanently store CO₂ in mineral form. Our goal is to turn carbon from a waste into a resource by creating carbon-negative materials for construction.

How does your technology work?

We cultivate specialized microalgae (we call them Bloomies) that use dissolved CO₂ and alkalinity to produce calcium carbonate, the same mineral found in limestone. This mineralization process locks carbon in a stable, solid form for thousands of years. The resulting biominerals can directly replace mined limestone in things like cement and other construction materials.

What is biomineralization?

Biomineralization is the process by which living organisms produce minerals. In nature, it’s how corals, shells, and some algae form calcium carbonate. At Bloomineral, we replicate and optimize this process under controlled conditions to turn CO₂ into solid carbonate minerals.

Is Bloomineral’s process permanent?

Yes. Once CO₂ is converted into calcium carbonate, it becomes geologically stable, just like natural rock formations that have stored carbon for millions of years. This makes it one of the most durable and measurable forms of carbon removal.

Where are you based?

We’re based at the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement (LSCE) near Paris, France — one of the world’s leading research centers for climate science.

What are you producing right now?

We currently produce ultra-pure calcium carbonate powder using our biomineralization process. It’s being tested as a carbon-negative filler and white cement component in collaboration with construction industry partners.

When will your technology be available at scale?

We’re moving from lab-scale validation to pilot-scale production. Our next milestone is to build a pilot reactor that will demonstrate the process at industrial scale and produce our first tons of biominerals for real-world testing.

How can companies or investors work with you?

We collaborate with construction material producers, industrial partners, researchers, and climate investors. If you’re interested in partnerships or investment opportunities, visit our Contact page.

How is Bloomineral different from other carbon removal companies?

Many carbon removal technologies store CO₂ underground or in temporary biomass. We use biology to turn CO₂ into a solid mineral that’s stable and useful. By embedding carbon removal directly into materials industry already uses, we aim to make it scalable and permanently embedded in the infrastructure of everyday products.
